Secret Battles III. Configuration Mode IV. Name the Characters V. Equipment VI. Magic VII. Items VIII. Enemies IX. Mithril X. Mithril Items XI. Jogurt The Gizmo --------------------- Go downstairs and leave the house. Walk around and talk to the people. Whenever you find barrels or pots -- this holds true for the whole game -- search them. You may find useful items inside. On the right side of time, east of the Abbey, you'll find Sir Astral's school. Talk to Sarah, then go downstairs and talk to Astral. Go back upstairs and sit down next to Chester. A soldier will appear and call Astral to the castle. Sarah will ask if you want to go to the castle. Answer yes, and Sarah and Chester will join. Leave Astral's school and go up to the castle. Sarah will trick the guards into letting you past. Inside the castle, go into the room on the left and open the three chests. Then leave that room and go into the main entrance. Enter the rooms on the left and right for some information, then talk to the old guy. Go up the stairs on the left, and you will be in a blue room. To the left is the Ancient Tower, or Ground Seal. Keep track of its location. Go right and up those stairs to the King's bedroom. Astral will mention the Ancient Tower and ask you to go with him. Follow him downstairs and talk to him again. Say yes. Go to the left to the door to the Ancient Tower. Talk to the guard and he will move aside. Walk past him through the cave to the door of the Ancient Tower. Instead of going in, walk around behind the back. When the Tower is centered on the screen, face up and search. You will get a piece of Mithril. Hang on to it, it will be useful later. Enter the tower and the Gizmo will appear. The first fight begins. Move your characters up onto the tan altar and wait at the bottom. Keep Sarah between Bowie (the main character) and Chester so she can heal both, although she can also hit. You will fight three Gizmos, while the other three remain at the top. Send Chester, since he's the fastest, up to draw them out and then go back down. It's a good idea in most fights to finish off one enemy before going onto another, unless it would be overkill, you are building experience, or you want to use a multi-target spell (but that's later). If Bowie dies, you lose, so be sure to keep him healed. If you die, that's okay; you will just be taken to the Abbey and given another shot from the beginning (the same holds true if you cast Egress or use an Angel Wing). You get to keep all the experience you obtained. After the fight, the main Gizmo will escape. Go back to the castle and go up to Elis's bedroom. Astral and the King will fight, and Astral will get rid of the Gizmo that was possessing the King. Gizmo escapes and Astral collapses. The Search for Hawel --------------------- You will be back down in the throne room. The Minister will order the soldiers to find and kill Gizmo. King Granseal will come down and tell you that Astral has recovered. When he asks you to go to find Hawel, say "yes." Go upstairs and talk to Astral, then go back out into town. The townspeople (and the people in the castle, too) have new things to say. There's a pet shop in the south center, where you'll meet Kiwi the tortoise. He joins later. The stores to the west are now open. Get better weapons for Bowie and Chester, then try to leave town. Jaha will show up and join your party. Outside the town, you'll fight Oozes and Huge Rats. Chester's spear will allow him to attack enemies a square away from him. Take out the Ooze at the top of the screen first, then head along the bottom and up. Before you finish the battle, you may want to build experience by using the Egress spell. You always level up at 100 experience, but enemies give you less and less EXP as you go up levels. You won't need to roll up points on every battle, however, certain fights (like this one) are good point roller-uppers. You'll want to be at level 3 or 4 before you continue. After you win the battle, don't go into Yeel yet. Instead, go down and enter the cave to the south of Granseal. Enter the door and you'll be in the cave Slade was in in the intro (with the same music). The chest on the first floor can't be opened until almost the end of the game. Go downstairs and open the other chest for Power Water. Then leave and go to Yeel. Talk to everybody in Yeel and note the piano. It'll be useful later. Save your game and go talk to Kazin in the upper-left. He'll go with you, but he doesn't your party just yet. Go outside and you'll be in another battle. There's one new enemy here, the Huge Bat. It's not too much to worry about. After the battle, go into Hawel's house. No one answers the door, so you go in. Galam soldiers have killed Hawel. Hawel tells you about Ground Seal. After he dies, Kazin will join your party. He knows Blaze. Don't forget the two chests, then go outside. Lemon from Galam will be here, but he leaves to attend to other matters. You'll be in a new fight with Galam Soldiers and Galam Archers, which have a range attack. It's a good idea to get Kazin up a level or two before you attempt to complete this battle. At level 5, he gains Blaze 2. Sarah will also get Heal 2 at level 7, but you probably won't be that high at this point unless you got a lot of experience. Kill the first two enemies, a Huge Bat and a Galam Soldier, then move down. A Galam Archer and Galam Soldier will come up. Kill them and heal if you need to. Go down towards Yeel and kill the Archer first. After the battle, you are captured and taken to Galam. Zeon Awakens --------------------- After some dialogue, you will be in a cell in Galam. Walk up next to Jaha and there will be some more conversation. Slade will open the cell doors for you. Search the table in the cell on the right for the Chirrup Sandals. Try to go up the stairs and Slade will show you the secret exit. When you go to drop down, Slade will decide to come with you. Go through the tunnel and up the stairs. Keep going up and you'll reach an Abbey. Save and continue to the chamber to the west. King Galam will send Lemon and the army to Granseal. Go down the steps and you will encounter a soldier. After some weird dialogue, you're thrown into another fight. Beat the first three enemies, using the weapon racks for cover. The Galam Archer can shoot over them, but he can't hit you if you're right next to him. Chester can also throw his spear over the racks. After you get rid of the two Soldiers and the Archer, group your characters just outside the narrow passage. Heal anybody's who hurt, especially Bowie and Chester, then move Chester to the upper-right corner of the passage, so he can throw his spear diagonally at the Galam Mage. The Galam Mage will come down. Move the rest of your characters over to fight. Be sure to keep Sarah near Bowie to heal him. If ever two enemies are next to each other, have Kazin cast a Blaze 2 spell to hit both of them. The Galam Knight will probably come down if you move a character out of the passage. He's the boss, so concentrate your attacks on him. When he dies, you win the battle. Slade gets the Jewel of Light back from the guard and gives it to Bowie. It fuses to his neck. Slade joins the party to get the Jewel of Evil back. He's weak right now, but stick with him and he becomes very powerful later in the game when he's promoted. Explore the rest of the castle (you can't get into the treasure room yet, so don't worry about it), then leave and talk to everyone in the town. Buy the Steel Lance for Chester (he won't have a range attack any more, but it increases his attack) and Short Rods for Sarah and Kazin. Then go back to the Abbey in the castle and save before you leave. Slade tries to trick the guards into letting him deliver a "package" to King Galam, but one of the guards tries to get it from him and you've got a fight on your hands. It's a good idea to get Slade up a level or two, or he'll be weak later on. The best strategy here is to remain up near Galam and let the enemies come up towards you. Once you're down to the last four, head down towards Granseal. One of the Galam Soldiers will come up. Kill it, then heal up and let your slower characters catch up. Move your stronger characters (Bowie, Chester, and Jaha) down first to protect the others. Try to have Kazin cast a Blaze 2 on multiple enemies. Once you kill the Dark Cleric, the level ends. Go into Granseal and go to the building east of the former pet shop. The Tortoise, Kiwi, will be in here. You can name him if you want. Go to the port and search the boat for some Quick Chicken, then save your game at the Abbey. Go into the castle and go to the throne room. Astral and Lemon will leave for the Ancient Tower. Follow them with the King and Minister to Ground Seal. Talk to Lemon outside, then enter. Go up to where the Gizmo first appeared and descend. Keep going down the stairs until you reach the bottom. Astral and Galam will fight, and then Galam will summon some soldiers. First, get Kiwi up a level or two. Like Slade, he's weak at first, but gets better when promoted. If any enemy gets down to 3 HP or less, leave it there for Kiwi to finish off. Keep your characters below the statue until you've finished off the Knights and Archers. Heal your characters and move them up. The first Dark Smoke will probably come down. Kill it with your powerful hitters. You may have some characters killed; that's okay. The Dark Cleric and Galam Mage will come down. Use Blaze 2 to hit them both if Kazin is alive. Then you'll be left with the one Dark Smoke. Kill it and you've finished the battle. Galam will open the portal to the Evil World and escape in a light tube with Princess Elis. Astral and the Minister will throw Bowie up. He gets the Jewel of Evil, which merges with the Jewel of Light. Apparently, Sega forgot this, because later in the game, Zeon takes JUST the Jewel of Evil and leaves Bowie with the Jewel of Light... oh well. Leave the tower and the castle. A pit will open and the two soldiers will fall in. Search the small pit to the right that's a single square big for another piece of Mithril. Keep it; it will be used late in the game. Then go through Astral's former school and out to the port. Tell Astral you're ready to leave. A New Home --------------------- Take the plank above deck. When the miner appears, agree to go with him. You will go to North Cliff and monsters will appear. First, cast Egress to go back to the ship and save your game. Back at North Cliff, keep the bulk of your characters right where they are to take care of the Witch and Green Ooze, but send one or two characters up into the forest to kill the Hunter Goblin. Keep Kiwi away from the Witch, as one spell will kill him. Don't go any further north than the Hunter Goblin. One of the Goblins will probably come down, kill it and the one coming in from the right. Bring the characters in the forest down and hurry right. Another Hunter Goblin and Goblin will come down from the right, kill those and head up. When you reach the top of the lake, wait for everyone to catch up. One of the Goblins should be chasing you around the lake. Have Kazin cast Blaze 2 to hit both the Witch and the Hunter Goblin if possible. Kill the Witch first. After that, go down and kill that Goblin that's coming up. You rescue the miner and return to the ship just as it disappears and the new Granseal appears. They sure work fast. Ribble --------------------- A year passes. After the dialogue, search the pots and go into the Tactical Base. At the top of the blue carpeted room is a shield. Search it and you'll get the Warrior Pride. Leave the castle and go down to where all the people all. You'll meet Peter, the Phoenix (the manual calls him Ash, but he's Peter in the game). The Minister arrives and Peter goes to the castle. Follow him there. Peter will mention Volcanon. Astral asks you to go with Peter to Mt. Volcano. Peter joins, but you can't control him in battle. Leave the castle and go down to the lower-right. Go up the steps and cross the bridge to the Weapon Shop. Purchase new weapons, then save your game and leave the town. Go right and down between the mountains. Head down and then right. You will enter another fight. This is a good fight to roll up points on, even though you can't control Peter. It's not too hard, other than the Vampire Bats. Stay on the grass and you will move faster. Afterwards, go into Ribble (the town). All the houses are locked, except the Mayor's, at the top. Go there and talk to the Mayor. After he sees Peter, he trusts you. Now all the houses open. Talk to everyone and purchase a Dagger for Slade at the Weapon Shop. Then go to the entrance and talk to May. She will join you. Save your game, go outside, and east to the river. Turn north and follow the path and you'll reach ANOTHER fight. This one is pretty much the same as the last, with a new enemy. Stay on the grass as before, and take advantage of Chester's and May's range to fight the Vampire Bats and Dark Dwarves. Let Peter take care of the first vampire bat to the right and keep going down on the grass. Keep a strong character in the rear as a Vampire Bat will attack from behind after the first Dark Dwarf. Be sure to have a character with an empty item spot kill the second Witch, as she may drop a Power Ring. Afterwards, you may have taken a few hits, so go back to Ribble to save and revive. Then go back through where the fight was and up a screen. Cross the bridge and go west another screen. Enter the cave. It's difficult to see in the cave. Use the B button a lot to see where the enemies are. Send a few characters through the right passage (no more than three) and the rest up the left. After you take care of the enemies there, wait above the blockade and enemies will come down: a Hunter Goblin, a Witch, and two Vampire Bats. When you've killed all of them, slowly move your characters up around the steps. Leave the space right at the bottom of the steps open. The Witch will come down. Kill her, then send one character up to draw the Hobgoblin down into your trap. The Vampire Bat may attack while you're fighting the Hobgoblin; ignore it until the Hobgoblin's dead. Before you leave, get the Silver Tank in the chest. Volcanon --------------------- Continue outside until you reach the trail on the mountains. Enter Polca Village. Save and revive your characters, then go into the room in the cliff. Search the pot for Protect Milk and go outside. Walk up on the left and talk to the person walking horizontally. After that strange sequence, buy some new weapons, then go right. A boy (Oddler) will come down from the mountain and collapse. After all the dialogue is done, head up Mt. Volcano. There's another fight here with a lot of new enemies. The Death Archer is the boss; kill him and the fight ends automatically. Defeat the first two Hobgoblins and regroup at the left of the next ledge. Kill the enemies here. Ignore the bottom path; enemies may come up, but you don't need to go down it. Instead, send all your characters up. Move them up as far as possible, even if it means overshooting an enemy; attack from above whenever possible. It's hard to manuever here and the Death Archer will come down and shoot at you, accompanied by a Death Monk. Stay away from the grassy area on the right side of the ledge, as the Witch can cast Freeze across the gap. Always attack the Death Archer if possible; it's okay to block the square if you can put a hit on him. If you're right next to the Archer, he can't hit you. After the battle, go into Bedoe. Get new equipment on the second level and use the lower-left exit to go to the Abbey. Then go up to the fourth floor and see King Bedoe and Luke. Bedoe asks Peter to see Volcanon. Go up the steps and enter the shrine. After the lengthy dialogue, go back down. Peter joins, so now you can control him (finally!). On the way out of town, go to the left and stand as far down as you can. A bird will fall on you. If you don't do this, you can't get him later. When you're done here (search level three for a Quick Ring), return to Polca. Luke will be in a fight with some monsters. Gerhalt will show up and join you. The monsters knock out Luke and the battle begins. Go down the steps and defeat the first two enemies. Send Peter and another fighter down on the right to dispatch the Evil Cloud and Zombie. Kazin's Blaze works very well on Zombies. Defeat all the enemies on the second level, but don't go near the stairs. Wait for Peter and his companion to catch up and heal them. Then hurry down the stairs before you get trapped on them. Since Peter can fly, he can go around the stairs. Don't send him too far ahead or he'll get killed. Spread your characters apart so the Master Mage can't use a Blaze 2 on all of you. The Mage is the boss, so go after him. If a Black Monk starts healing him, just keep attacking the Master Mage. The Kraken --------------------- After the battle, go to the Mayor's and get a raft prepared. When you walk away, the mayor asks you to take Oddler (the blind kid) with you. Say "yes." Go outside to your raft and Luke will join you. Go back into Polca and get a better sword for him. Then get on the raft and go down. You'll pop out of the cave in the water near Ribble. Save your game in Ribble, then get back on the raft. Keep going down until you pass a turn to the right. Get off the raft on the right side just below the turn and go right to a desert. The screen will flash and there's another fight. You don't need to complete this fight right now. However, you do get lots of experience here, and the next fight with the Kraken is very tough. Purchase a pile of healing items (Healing Seeds are probably the best choice). When you're ready to take on the Kraken, get on the raft and keep heading south down the river until you the Kraken appears. This is probably the hardest level in the game. First, have all your characters pass their turns until one of the Kraken Legs moves up next to the raft. Then have your best hitter hit it and Kazin use Blaze 1 (you want to save his MP) while May fires at it and Peter hits it from the ocean. After a couple Legs are gone, they start coming much more rapidly. Have characters that aren't able to hit use healing items. The Kraken Arms have a extra-space range attack, so keep your characters a square away from the edge of the raft to make them move up next to it. The most important characters to keep alive, other than Bowie, are Peter for his flying, Sarah for healing, May for ranged attacks, and Gerhalt for hitting. Don't worry too much about the appendages on the left, since the Kraken Head comes from the right. The Head has a ranged Aqua attack, but don't worry too much about keeping your characters alive. The Power Ring, if you got it, can be used as an item to increase a character's attack. Only use it once, or it will break. You can restore it to normal at a shop by using the Repair command. If you die (likely), then you've still got some pretty good experience. Ancient Ruins --------------------- When you've defeated the Kraken Head, you can enter Hassan. Here, you can get a pile of new weapons. Skip the Iron Rod and Knife and get the better stuff. There are two pieces of Mithril here: one in a chest on the west side, by the Abbey (walk through a gap in the fence to get it), and the other in a barrel down in the dried-up port. Talk to Dr. Rohde and then go outside. There's a fight out here with some new enemies. It may be a bit tough, but you get good experience. About this time, you'll have characters reaching Level 20. Promote anybody who reaches Level 20 immediately, contrary to the manual's advice. Slade and Kiwi both become very powerful when promoted, and Kiwi can fly. Note that Slade can't equip knives when he's a Ninja, so buy him a Steel Sword. When you promote Jaha, you will be asked if you want to use the Warrior Pride to make him a Baron. Choose "yes" and he can now equip swords in addition to axes. If you don't have the Warrior Pride, go get it, because once you promote him, you can't change him to a Baron. DON'T promote Sarah, Chester, or Kazin. They can be promoted to a better class like Jaha with items you'll get later. After all your business in Hassan is done, go back to the desert on the right, where you rolled up points for the Kraken. This is a pretty wimpy fight now, but it's necessary. After you win, keep going right to a cave. Enter and talk to the people. The old man's grandson Petro stole the Sky Orb and escaped to Grans. He goes with you to take a tunnel back to Grans. Get the Steel Sword if you want to and go back to Ribble. Go to the cave south of Ribble and the old guy will open the door. Inside is a fight with some of the enemies you fought outside Hassan. Split up your characters and go around to the top. Send your tougher characters on the right. The Arrow Launcher at the top is the boss. Afterwards, the old man tries to open the door, but it's been sealed by Petro. Open the chests to get the Wooden Panel. Return to Ribble and walk up to the tree. Press the A button to call up the menu. Have the character with the Wooden Panel use it as an item. A hole will open. Descend, and in the ancient tunnel, get the Achilles Sword. Go back to Hassan and talk with Dr. Rohde. When he sees that you've got the Achilles Sword, he goes with you to find the Caravan in the ruins to the west. Stock up on healing items first. Head west through the desert and into the ruins in the forest. Here, you'll find Taros, who guards the Caravan. Split up your characters into two groups and head towards the two sets of stairs. Don't go up them, however. When all the enemies other than the ones up on Taros's level have been defeated, regroup at the left stairs (they're faster). Then move your characters up, but not more than two squares past the right edge of the squares. The enemies surrounding Taros will come over and attack, but you're still out of Taros's 2-square range. After killing all of them, it might be a good idea to use Quit to save the game. Then heal Bowie and have him pound on Taros (the Achilles Sword is the only weapon that can hurt Taros). Taros can cast Bolt 2 by using his sword as an item. Spread your characters out around Taros so that he may not hit Bowie. Taros almost always gets 2 turns in a row, so be sure to keep Bowie healed up with items and Heal. Use the Power Ring as an item to increase Bowie's attack. When Taros is defeated, you obtain the Caravan. Get the chest for some Healing Water and leave the ruins. The Search for Creed --------------------- Return to Hassan and talk to the centaur standing near the entrance, Rick. He joins you. You can promote him as soon as he reaches Level 20. Talk to the merchant and buy better stuff. It's expensive, so you may not want to buy all of it. Purchase a Leather Glove for Sarah, even though she can't equip it right now. Remember, Jaha can use swords, so give him the Broad Sword, which is better than the Battle Axe. Outside, enter the Caravan by standing over it and pushing C. Use Depot to store items. Store all your Mithril and the Silver Tank. You won't need them right away. Go into the desert and walk up until you come to a gap in the mountains. Walk up onto the river and you will enter the Caravan. Go west and up until you see a cave. If you keep going up, you'll be back near Granseal (the new one). You don't need to go there, so go west and into the cave. Talk to the dwarves and search the fire for the Dry Stone. Cross the river and head west across another river. Go into the discolored patch of forest and you'll be in a nameless forest town. Walk up to the first building and then walk a bit west. Head south down into the forest and then push right. You should walk up on top of the trees and cross over to the right. Get the chest there, then go back west and up along the left side. Walk into the forest for another chest, then keep going all the way right and down for another one. Go into the biggest building, and search the bookshelf on the second floor for the Secret Book. Promote Sarah to Master Monk with the Vigor Ball and Kazin to Sorcerer with the Secret Book. Go outside and store the Mithril and Dry Stone in the Caravan. Then head west and another fight begins. The Orcs have a powerful attack; so ignore the High Priests and hit them. The left-most Orc is the boss, but kill the High Priest there first and get the Shining Ball from him. After you win this fight (it's not particularly difficult), head west to the next screen after reviving any dead folks. Oddler will hear something and you'll enter a small lake area. Walk up to the pool and talk to Elric. Harpies will appear and you're in another fight. The Harpies are very powerful. Don't chase after them; but when any approach, immediately kill them. Keep your weak characters in the middle of your group as several Harpies attack from behind. Range attacks are very useful here as you can shoot over cliffs and through trees. When you reach the second level, send most of your characters to the left and a few down. After rescuing Elric, go back to Hassan and get the Silver Tank out of the Caravan. Promote Elric to Brass Gunner with the Silver Tank and get a Robin Arrow for him. Go back into the Caravan and exchange Elric for Chester, since you want to wait to promote Chester until you get the Pegasus Wing, and gaining levels for him now is pretty worthless. Go back to where you found Elric and he'll show you a secret passage. Enter and head west. When you reach the point where the stairs are, turn south and walk through the barely-visible door. Keep going until you reach a room with three chests containing a Brave Apple and two other items. Go back into the passage and turn south halfway. Get the Mithril in the chest and then go back to the exit on the west. There's another fight out here on Devil's Tail. Stay out of the desert and circle around the top. The Skeletons have Medical Herbs, but they often won't use them. The second Skeleton is the boss. Once you beat it, go into Creed's mansion. Creed's Mansion --------------------- Walk around the left side of the Mansion and open the chest for a Healing Rain. Then go into the mansion and talk to Goliath. When he's guarding the upper door, go through the door on the left. You are shrunken and placed in Creed's "collection." In the Desktop Kingdom, talk to Karna and Eric, who will join your party later. You can access the Caravan if you want, but there's no real need. Talk to King Ponpei and he will let you go down to Floor World if you win against his Chess Army. Walk down to the lower book and descend onto the chessboard. Walk to the bottom of the chessboard and the fight begins. This is a tough level. The only possible way to win is to defeat the King. The Army won't attack until you move your characters up to the halfway point, so first organize your forces. Put your strongest characters in front and line up Bowie so he's even with the King. Split your forces on either side of him, then move up. The King should be the first to come down. When he does, pound on him. Don't worry about losing characters; you just have to kill the King. If a character can't hit the King, go for the Evil Bishops; they can heal the King to maximum. If you can't hit an Evil Bishop either, go for enemies standing next to the King to free up more room to hit him. Apollo is very effective on the King, if you have it. When (if) you win here, a chest will appear. Open it for the Cotton Balloon, then go to the lower-right hand corner. Talk to the guard and he will move aside. Walk to the end of the pen and use the Cotton Balloon to descend to Floor World. On Floor World, there's a doorway that leads to a room with the Caravan. You can also save here. Go to the lower-left corner and watch a guy trying to pick up the ring, then talk to Tyrin and Randolf. Then go to the hole in the upper-right. Enter and descend. You will encounter Willard and some rats. Defeat the first enemies (Rats hit harder than Bubbling Oozes) and move your characters past the pillar to the right. Split your characters around it, but once you're past it, send all your characters straight down to fight the two Bubbling Oozes. Willard and two of his Rats will be the only enemies left. Move your characters up about halfway between the blue slime and Willard. Then wait until Slade's turn and have him run up and cast Katon on Willard's group. If you don't have Katon, use Apollo or Dao. Willard and his rats will seperate, and you can then just pound on Willard until you win. Afterwards, go through the tunnel until you get out of that room. After some dialogue, Creed and the fairy will leave to see Evil Spirit. Go down the stairs and follow them. After Zeon appears, go back up and talk to Creed and the fairy. The fairy will go with you. Walk into the hallway and Golaith will give you the choice of taking Karna, Eric, Randolf, or Tyrin. Take Karna. Her healing abilities will soon come in very important. Go back into the room where you were shrunken and walk all the way to the left so you are standing under the desk. Take two steps right, then one step left. You should be facing the left-most square. Search and you will get the Running Ring. As you leave, Creed tells you that Oddler has to stay with him. You'll find out why later. North Parmecia --------------------- Go back through the cave and out of Devil's Tail. Go back onto the river and into the dwarf cave. The fairy will heal the sick dwarf and you will be rewarded with the Cannon. Take the Caravan up the river and you will be back by Granseal. Head into town. The Abbey now has a roof, and there is also a building in the lower- right. More importantly, there are a lot of new weapons at the weapon shop. When you've bought what you can, go back to the castle and talk to Astral. After Bowie and Peter explain what happened, he decides to go with you, although he doesn't actually fight. Talk to the dwarf up by the weapon shop once you have Astral and he will give you the Dynamite to blow open the North Cave. On your way out of town, Janet will appear and join your party. Go to the Abbey and promote her and Karna. Before you go to the next fight, you can get two pieces of Mithril. Go to Ribble and face the center of the kid's sandbox and Search. The other one is harder to get. Head east from Ribble. You will find a bridge to the east, crossing a river. Walk on to it, then take one more step right. Walk all the up way to a river, then turn right and walk until you hit some mountains. Take one step down, face right, and Search. Then back to North Cliff. You'll get into a fight here, and there are lots of new enemies. Defeat the first group of enemies. Kill the Dark Bishop with a character that has an empty spot in their inventory to get the Blizzard. Try to split up the enemies so that the Dark Bishop cannot use Aura. When you turn north, send your flying characters across the lake to kill the two Lesser Demons there. Then send them to the right to kill the Lesser Demon there while your other characters attack the Skeleton, Dark Bishop, and Dark Sniper. When you win the fight, Rohde will blow open the cave with the Cannon and then join you. Return to Granseal to get more equipment, then go back into the cave to North Parmecia. Before you get there, you'll face another fight in the cave. Move your characters to the left and shoot at the Dark Sniper and Skeleton. After defeating all the enemies that attack, move your characters up to the right of the column and left. Split your characters into two groups. Send one around the lake, and the other right. You will need to kill the Dark Bishop in both groups first. There is no boss here. Get the Fairy Tear, return to Granseal and save your game, then go back through the cave to North Parmecia. Mitula --------------------- When you come out, go immediately into Ketto (the town). Walk up to the former store and then keep going past it into the bushes. Go up and then left and talk to the store owner. When he leaves for his store, go back there and you can get weapons and items. If you want to save your game, go to the left of the church. Outside, you will encounter Geshp and Higins from Pacalon. Geshp and Higins fight, then Geshp leaves. Another battle begins. Move your characters diagonally up and right. The two Dark Soldiers on the right should miss you. At the beach, send your flying characters up to take on the Lizardman (the boss) while your other characters kill the Dark Bishop first and then the Wizard. Afterwards, Astral saves Higins from the Gizmo. Higins asks you to help Pacalon and then joins you. Go east past the dried-up river and around the lake. Cross back over the bridge and enter Pacalon. First, buy a Javelin and give it to Chester (although he can't be equipped with it right now). Then go into the castle and talk to Frayja and the King. From the King, take one step right so you are on the right edge of the blue carpet and then walk straight to to the wall. Search the wall and you will get the Pegasus Wing. You can now finally promote old Chester to Pegasus Knight. Give him the Javelin, because his attack power will be very weak. Go to the upper-left chamber and walk out the left wall next to the rocks. Go down the stairs and open the chest for Mithril. Buy anything you can afford (not much) and leave Pacalon. Head straight north to another fight. Defeat the first group of enemies that attacks, then move slightly to the right of the road. Head up and the group of the enemies on the left should not attack (except for the Dark Sniper). There will be another group from above that attacks. After killing them, veer back left to avoid the fights from the right. The Dark Sniper and Wyvern may attack anyway. Hurry up to the last group of enemies. You will be being attacked from behind, but all you need to do is kill the top Lizardman to finish the level. Karna's Boost spell is very useful, as it raises your agility and defense. After going back to Pacalon to save, go past where the fight was and turn right. Keep following the road until you reach a bridge over a river. Walk onto the bridge and you will see a girl (actually the greater devil Cameela) on the bridge. Worms are eating the bridge, so you take them on. First, send your flying characters down off the bridge to kill off the Wyverns and Lesser Demons there. Your archers may also be able to get in some hits. Once you've killed off all the enemies flying to the left of the bridge, wait for your flying characters to catch up and then head to the front of the bridge. Kill the enemies here and then move your characters slowly onto the bridge. One or two Worms should attack. Kill them and then move down again. More Worms will attack. Kill them, using the gaps in the bridge to your advantage by having characters with range attacks attack over them. When the Master Monk comes up, send a flying character or any other characters that can get there down to kill it. Then try to get down to the Wizard (the boss) and kill him. The girl turns out to be Cameela and tries to capture Sir Astral. Astral knew it was Cameela, however, and had a fireball ready. Cameela flees. Go past the bridge and into the town of Tristan. In the lower-left is the shop, but you won't be able to buy much. Be sure to get the Brass Knuckles for Sarah, however, as they are cheap and you need a powerful hitter in the next level. Go up to the top and down on the left. There's a church here. Go back up and into the middle entrance of the caverns. Take the stairs on the left and open the chest, then go back down and right. Fall through the hole, get the chest, and go through the hole again. Open the chest here and go out the door. Ascend the stairs again and enter the main door. Go straight up and you'll reach the Shrine of Mitula. Zalbard has taken over the shrine. It's important to keep your characters close together in this level. It's hard enough as it is without being trapped by enemies. Move up and kill the two worms on the left. Then head straight left and up on the left side of the pillars. You will encounter a Wizard and a number of Master Monks. Try to use multi-enemy spells on them. There is a chest to the left on a small island that is apparently impossible to get. Send your flying characters up to attack the Dark Knight, who's the boss. Enemies will begin to come from the right, but any characters that can hit the Dark Knight should do so. The only possible way to win this level is to kill the Dark Knight. After winning the battle, go back into Tristan to buy anything you can and save. Then go back to the Shrine and inside. Here you'll encounter Zalbard. This is one of the hardest levels in the game (as if the outside wasn't hard enough), ranking right up there with such "favorites" as the Kraken, Taros, and the Chess Army. Move your characters slowly up and kill the enemies. Range attacks are very useful here. Don't send any characters too far to the left or right, or you will draw out more enemies, and even more importantly, don't stand on any of the squares bordering the lake or Zalbard will start casting Bolt 2 on you. Once you've defeated the enemies here, hurry to the left and go up along the left wall. Don't stand next to the lake or Zalbard will use Bolt 2. He'll use it anyway, but standing by the lake is asking for it. Have anybody with range attacks or that can fly begin attacking Zalbard as soon as he comes down from the statue. Your other characters have to loop around the top of the lake to get to Zalbard. The Master Monk will heal Zalbard, but leave him alone. He can only use two Heal 4s. Likewise, Zalbard will eventually run out of MP, but don't wait for it. It may be best to have Bowie sit this one out unless you're short on big hitters. If a characters can't hit Zalbard, go after the Master Monk or use an Indra Staff on him to try to steal some of his MP. Strangely, there is a standard Gargoyle here that seems to serve no purpose other than to get in your way. This is a very difficult level, at least the second hardest or possibly the hardest. If you beat Zalbard (the operative word being "if"), he will drop the Ground Orb and die. Mitula will appear and talk, then vanish. Go into the room on the right after getting the Mithril from the chest and talk to all the storytellers in a clockwise pattern from the top. Then leave and get the Critical Sword in the other chest. Go through the door and talk to Taya. She will join. Go down and open the two chests, then leave the Shrine. On the way out, the bird you rescued in Bedoe will show up and join (assuming you saved him, that is). Leave town and go back to Pacalon. The Nazca Ship --------------------- Go to the castle and talk to the King and Frayja. Frayja goes with you to get back into Moun and kill the devils there. Leave the castle and Geshp will appear, wanting to get the key from Frayja. He summons Cameela, but Cameela leaves. Geshp, after borrowing Cameela's army, also disappears and another fight begins. This fight is not too difficult. Move your characters straight down. Keep your weaker characters in the middle as enemies will attack from the sides. When you reach the last group of enemies, use Slade's or Kazin's magic to hit all three. Then go after the Devil Soldier, the boss. Afterwards, leave town and go up north back where you fought Wyverns for the first time. There's another battle here. Move your characters up along the right side of the path like before. Flying characters are very useful here. Partway through the battle, Jaro will decide he's on your side and begin fighting the enemies. He's computer-controlled like Peter was and isn't very useful this battle. Spread your characters out so that the Necromancers' Freeze 3 spells can't hit several characters. The Bow Master is the boss. Jaro will join your party as a normal character after this fight. Go up into Moun and Frayja will open the gate. He will then join your party and replace another character (probably Taya). A battle then immediately begins. Since Taya is much more useful than Frayja, cast Egress to go back to Pacalon and take Frayja out of the party. Head to the west. Make sure you kill the Necromancer with somebody that has an empty spot, as he may drop a Mage Staff. Head underneath the pair of trees and up on the left side of the picnic table. Use a multi-enemy spell on the Shaman and Mud Men, and then attack the Shaman, the boss. After the fight, you meet Zynk. Follow him down to the shelter. Talk to Gyan on the far right side, who joins. Then go back to the exit and Zynk will decide to come with you, but he doesn't join yet. Purchase an Iron Knuckle at the weapon store and any other equipment you couldn't afford before, then go to the gate, but don't leave. Head to the upper left corner, on the rocks, and the Arm of Golem will rise from the ground. Walk up to it and push A to call up the menu. Search and you'll get the Arm. Leave town to the west and store the Arm of Golem in the Caravan. Then truck all the way back to Creed's Mansion (that's right, Creed's Mansion). Oddler has left, really being the greater devil Odd Eye. Creed chased him. Goliath will allow you to take the other three characters you had a choice from. Back at Moun, go out the left exit and head west to Nazca. Here you'll fight Cameela. Move your characters up and left and defeat the first group of enemies. You will now be fighting one big group of enemies for pretty much the rest of the fight. Don't try to advance much or you will wind up being attacked from behind. Use magic on the Mud Men, as they have a very high defense. The Dragonewts can cast Blaze 1 with their Heat Axes, but it isn't very powerful. When the enemies stop coming, head up towards Cameela. Cameela is not nearly as difficult as Zalbard. Ignore the Necromancer and pound on Cameela. Try to defeat her before the Shaman comes down to heal her. If it looks like you aren't going to make it in time, send a character or two up to distract the Shaman. When you win, Cameela gives you the Sky Orb and then Geshp kills her. Fall into the eye of the bird to enter the Nazca Ship. Get the Nazca Cannon and talk to Zynk. Walk up to the cockpit and use the Sky Orb as an item. The Nazca Ship will take off and fly towards Grans. Geshp shoots the Nazca Ship down with Prism Flowers. Return to Grans --------------------- Go down and enter the small building. Here you can save your game. Go upstairs and grab the chests, then leave. Re-enter the building, but instead of actually walking in, head west between the trees and bushes. Turn north when possible and keep walking up until you find Sheela. She will join the party. Leave the temple and go west to another fight. This is another tough level, mainly because the enemies are so clustered together. Stay mostly on the grass and head down and left. If you have Dispel, cast it on the Mist Demons so they can't Muddle you. If you get Muddled, cast Detox on the hardest-hitting characters to un-Muddle them. Spread your characters out, so not too many characters can be Muddled at once. Mud Men will appear near the end of the battle; ignore them and concentrate on the tougher enemies. The Bow Rider is the boss. After the fight, continue to the west and head down and west. Near the mountains you'll find Roft. Inside, purchase any weapons you need (there's no new stuff, but Sheela could use a better weapon) and then go to the top level. At the house in the middle, you'll find Petro and Paseran from Ribble. Petro was killed by the devils. When you leave the house, Zynk will become angry and join you. Leave Roft and go down beneath the mountains. Cross the series of bridges over small islands until you reach a cave. Get the Arm of Golem out of the Caravan and store the Sky Orb while you're at it. In the cave, step on the floor tile to warp down. Go to the lower-right and talk to Claude the golem. If you've got the Arm of Golem, he will join. Go to the lower- left and step on the bottom tile to make a bridge. Cross and go up the steps. You'll now be in the Ancient Tunnel back by Ribble. Open the door, then go back through the cave to Roft. Pass up around the north side of the mountains and go down. Enter the small clearing and you'll find Geshp and his Prism Flowers. Geshp, once again, leaves, but you will get to fight him soon. This level is reminiscent of the Laser Eye level in the first Shining Force. It's impossible to avoid the Prism Flowers, but try to lure enemies into the path of the Flowers, as they will also be damaged. Aura is very useful here. Send an archer and a flying character or two to the left to take care of the Prism Flowers while you send your other characters down on the left side of the lake. Curve to the left while you fight the enemies here to get out of the way of the Prism Flowers. You can kill the Prism Flowers, but don't sit around killing them once you've killed the other enemies. Head west and down the left side along the cliff, standing at the points where you can't be hit by Prism Flowers. The Executioner is the boss, and it will generally drop a Battle Sword, so have an empty space ready to get it. There's another chest here that's impossible to get. After this battle, return to Roft and then go back through the Prism Flower forest. You'll encounter Red Baron in the next battle, along with every Bow Rider on the face of the planet. Keep your weakest characters far to the back, as the Bow Riders have a very long range. Kill them before the other enemies. Spells that can hit multiple enemies are very useful here, especially Bolt spells. After defeating the Bow Riders, head west along the grass. You can allow your weaker characters to catch up now. As you head down, you will be approached from behind by a Minotaur and a Hell Hound. Don't try to run from them; take the hits and kill them or they will just follow you. Red Baron has a partially full green life meter; it goes down just like a normal life meter, but when it reaches the bottom, his yellow life bar begins to go down, allowing him to have over 99 HP (150, to be exact). After the fight, Red Baron is revealed to be Lemon. When he finds out what he's done, he flees to kill himself. Now comes a very important step. Get the Dry Stone out of the Caravan and go up to the river. Face the different-looking part of the river and use the Dry Stone as an item to dry up the river. Enter the discolored forest and you'll be in the dwarf village. Explore for the White Ring and Demon Rod. Give the White Ring to Bowie, but don't equip the Demon Rod, as it is cursed. You should also begin checking the Deals option at this point, as the merchants will sometimes have special stuff there. The most important feature of the town, however, is the Dwarven Blacksmith in the upper left, who can make weapons out of the Mithril you've been lugging around for the whole game. Save your game before you get anything as he gives you random stuff depending on which character you picked. The best stuff to get here is the Misty Knuckles, Grand Cannon, Mystery Staff, and Gisarme for Slade. You will have to try many many times to get the Gisarme, but it is worth it as it is probably the best weapon in the game. It has a very high attack and randomly kills enemies when you attack with it. DON'T get anything for Bowie, as you will be getting the Force Sword soon. Then go back outside and down into Galam. Arc Valley --------------------- There's not much to do in Galam, but you can now go into the treasure room. It's just two items. Head south out of Galam and you will encounter Geshp. Finally, after many escapes, you get to take him on. This level is not too difficult if you took the time to get good Mithril weapons. The Burst Rocks that appear will explode and damage all nearby characters. Keep your characters away from them and then have an Archer shoot them to minimize damage. When you reach Geshp, just pound on him and fire over the pit with ranged weapons. Surround him with characters and he will sometimes attack instead of casting Freeze. For such an important character, he's pretty easy. When you defeat him, he tries to flee but Zeon kills him. Immediately head west to Yeel. Do not go down or you will get into another fight. Go to the piano and play it, then go to the church. After some dialogue, you meet Hawel's son Chaz. Chaz tells you about the Holy (or Force) Sword and then joins you. Search the underground room for the Evil Knuckles (don't equip them, they're cursed). There is also a merchant here. On your way out of Yeel, Lemon shows up and joins you. He has the Dark Sword, but don't equip it, since it's cursed. Get him a good item from the Blacksmith or just get a Heat Axe with Deals. Like Peter, he automatically comes back after a fight because he's a vampire. Now go back down towards the cave where Slade was and you'll enter another battle. This level is not particularly hard, mostly because it is so short. Send your characters down and take on the Hydra, the boss. There are a bunch of enemies in other places that won't even attack you unless you chase after them. If you get the Evil Ring, don't equip it; it's cursed. After the battle, go into the Ancient Cave (the cave where Slade was at the start of the game). Go down the steps on the left and the statue on the wall will open. Enter and take the Force Sword by pressing A to call up the menu and then choosing Search. Leave the cave and walk around the north side of Ground Seal to the little building. Walk up to the devil head and use the Force Sword as an item to open its mouth. Enter. Ground Seal --------------------- First, get through the maze by going basically counter-clockwise and then through the skull door. Inside the tower, you meet Odd Eye, who was Oddler. Another battle begins. During the battle, some of the tiles will collapse, forcing you to walk all the way to the right and up, then back to the left and up to Odd Eye. Send a flying character or two over to kill the Demon, but otherwise don't let your flyers - or anybody else - get ahead. Many of your items at this point can be used with the Item command, so experiment. If you use an item and it becomes cracked, don't use it anymore until you can get to a store and choose Repair. It may be possible to run by the enemies in some cases, but don't unless you're low on HP. Boost is very useful, as always. Save Bowie and Slade's MP until the end, so they can use Bolt and Raijin spells to hit multiple enemies. Odd Eye has a long range with his odd eye beam, but it's not very powerful. After you defeat him, he dies. Continue past Odd Eye and up the stairs. You will meet Creed again. He functions like a church. Go out past him and you'll be in the next-to next-to-last fight. This is a tough level. At the very beginning, cast Boost and cast it again whenever it starts wearing off on characters. There are often enemies hiding behind pillars, so check with the B button. You'll have to use Egress several times here to build up enough experience to get through here. Don't send flying characters off anywhere, because they'll be surrounded and killed. Conserve MP in this level, as you'll need it later. Move slowly, except on stairs. Hurry up them as soon as possible, because there's not much room to manuever. The Reaper is the boss, so skip the other enemies at the end and go after it. Afterwards, go back to Creed, then go past the Reaper into some familiar territory. At the end of the corridor, you'll be back in the room where you fought just before Ground Seal was destroyed. This time, you're on a strange blue ledge over the ground. Move your characters up and defeat the first three enemies. Then head up on the right side of the gap. Continue on the right past the next gap, then wait there. Galam wil come down. He has a blue life bar that functions like a green bar, but when it's gone, his green bar goes down, and THEN his yellow bar. Pound on him and he'll fall quickly. You immediately enter the next battle with Zeon. First, send your characters down and take on the Pyrohydra, Arch Demon, and Devil Griffin. Then head right and up the ledge on the right. Kill the Zeon Guard flower. The one on the left can shoot at you, but it won't do much damage. After killing all the enemies on the right, go around the bottom and up on the left. Kill the Zeon Guard and then use Quit to save the game before you take on Zeon. Cross the bridge where the Zeon Guard was and then kill off the Blue Shaman and Pyrohydra. The Blue Shaman may drop a useful Healing Rain. Zeon has a black life bar. First you have to hit him until his black bar goes down, followed by his blue, green, and yellow bars. He can knock off a lot of HP since he often gets two attacks in a row and many turns, but don't worry too much about staying alive. Have your best hitter (other than Bowie) stand in front of Zeon while you surround him with flying characters. Have your spellcasters and archers hit him from a distance. Keep Bowie out of the fight unless you absolutely need him. Boost, as always, is a big help. When Zeon dies, you get to watch the long ending. Secret Battles --------------------- There are two battles not normally part of the game. One is in the forest town east of Devil's Tail. There is an entrance on the right side of the town. Just walk to the right in the gap in the trees. Here, the object is to beat the Bubbling Ooze at the top of the screen. Other enemies will appear, but ignore them as they will just come back. When you win, the game records your best time here and you are taken back outside. The other battle has you fighting all the bosses. At the end of the game, when the two jewels are displayed, wait a while and "And more...." will appear on the screen. Hit any button to go to the Ancient Tunnel and fight a Dark Smoke, the Chess King, Willard, Zalbard, Cameela, two Prism Flowers, Red Baron, Geshp, Odd Eye, Galam, and Zeon. Don't worry too much about the Prism Flowers, as they are too out of the way to kill and won't hit you much. Try to concentrate on one boss at a time and kill the toughest ones first. This is a difficult fight. Don't cast Egress here, or you will be taken back to the title screen. Configuration Mode --------------------- The Configuration menu allows you to, among other things, play as the enemies! When the Sega logo appears at the start of the game, hit Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Right, Down, Left, and B. You should hear a sound. When you select your game, immediately after choosing it, hit Up, A, C, and Start. "Configuration...." will be displayed and you will be given several options. Special Turbo will increase the speed at which the cursor moves. Control Opponent does the obvious, and Auto Battle has the computer fight for you. Game Completed allows you to use the name the characters code if you haven't won the game yet. When controlling the enemies, you can have them Drop items. Any item that you can not normally buy in stores will then appear on the Deals menu. This allows you to get unlimited Mystery Staffs, Counter Swords (Odd Eye's sword), Hyper Cannons in North Parmecia, many Rings, and other good stuff. You will have to pay for the items. Unfortunately, you can't get Cameela's Iron Ball, and the Taros Sword does absolutely nothing (nobody can equip it). By turning on Control Opponent and Auto Battle, you can play as the enemies, but not your characters, so you're fighting yourself! This basically gives you a whole new game, trying to win each battle as the monsters. This is interesting on the boss secret level. If you turn on Control Opponent but not Auto Battle, you can play a two-player game, having one player play as the Shining Force and the other play as the devils. This is also interesting on the boss level. Name the Characters --------------------- If you want, you can name all the characters, not just Bowie and Kiwi. First, finish the game once or turn on Game Completed in the configuration mode. Then, start a new game and after naming Bowie, put the cursor on END. Hold Up, A, B, and C on Controller 2, then hit A, C, and Start on Controller 1. Sarah will appear. Name her and then each character will appear after that. Kiwi will not appear, you can name him when you get him. After Pao moves, go back into where it was and go to the building where you can save your game. Walk in so that you can just see your head and then walk all the way left. Walk all the up and you'll see Jogurt (the woodchuck at Gong's house) lying on a mat. He will jump up. Go to Headquarters and you will now have Jogurt! Jogurt only has 1 HP and takes off 1 when he hits, so he's worthless (but cute). If you manage to have him kill an enemy, he gets the Yogurt Ring, which, when used, makes other people look like him. He can be promoted an infinite number of times, but his class always remains YGRT. If he goes up a level, it says ".... It appears that Jogurt's level has increased to 1." Oh well.
