In space, nobody can
hear you scream... or in this case, yawn.
Sunsoft's conversion of the clever Midway arcade game
lacks the impact and urgency of the original.
You're never in any great danger from the aliens
infesting each area, and it takes a lifetime to clear
the zones of hostile xenos. Dull artwork and a
limited color palette add to the sense of
boredom. |

Xevious was a pioneer when it
was first released in 1982, but six years later, it just
doesn't compare to more advanced vertically scrolling
shooters like Zanac. As a straight conversion of
the Namco arcade classic, however, Xevious makes the
grade. All of the blasting and bombing action is
here, even if the colors aren't as bright and the sound
effects aren't as realistic. |

This galactic adventure is
lacking. To be more specific, it's lacking the
charm of Mega Man's cartoony artwork, the depth of
Metroid's immense levels, and the slick design and high
production values of Konami's best action games.
Calling Xexyz a plain vanilla experience is much too
generous... it'd be more accurate to call this game
unflavored.
QUICK HINT:
You can continue to reap the rewards offered in the
power-up rooms by visiting them repeatedly.
Sometimes, you can get up to four bonus items before the
gravy trail derails. |
