When scheming
villain and part time racing enthusiast Dick Dastardly
is kidnapped, it's up to his canine sidekick Muttley to
rescue him from the other Wacky Racers in this
by-the-numbers platformer. Wacky Racers is well
designed, with a lively soundtrack and a unique power-up
system, but the linear levels and familiar gameplay
won't take anyone by surprise. |

A long-lost (and exceedingly
wealthy) uncle dies. Before you can get a piece of
the inheritance, however, you'll have to prove yourself
as a ruthless businessman, buying and selling stocks
with suspiciously familiar names while wooing your
gold-digging girlfriend. The game's originality is
made even more appealing with crisp visuals and an
intuitive interface. |

After years of settling for
supporting character roles, Toad finally gets his very
own video game. He takes on Mario's twisted
counterpart Wario in this puzzle title, picking up
creatures and setting them on bombs to dispose of
them. There's more to do in Wario's Woods than in
your average puzzle game, but the quirky play mechanics
also make it more difficult to play. |

Little of the bone-crushing
impact of the sport of hockey is captured in this
game... the characters are nearly microscopic, and the
gameplay is sluggish and unresponsive. The total
absence of a Detroit team- even a fictional one!- is the
final slap(shot) in the face of hockey fans.
Wayne Gretsky may have endorsed this game, but it's
doubtful that anyone else would. |

Wayne's World!
Excrement! Partly finished! The adventures
of Wayne and Garth stumble from the movie screen onto
the NES in this uneventful action title. You'll
run from one end of the screen to the other, attacking
ridiculous enemies while wondering why shy, nerdy Garth
is so much more powerful than his bombastic friend
Wayne. Shouldn't it be the other way
around? |

The only wrestling
organization to pose a serious threat to the WWF gets
its first video game, courtesy of FCI. Although
the wrestlers resemble their real-life counterparts, the
graphics as a whole are stiff and blocky, and the
computer opponents are all but impossible to beat.
This difficulty makes even the impressive voice effects
and unique grappling system hard to
enjoy.
FAST FACT: WCW was
only a blip on the professional wrestling radar when
this game was released, but it eventually snowballed
into the WWF's only major competitor. Its stronger
emphasis on wrestling and superstars like Hulk Hogan
made it wildly popular for several years. Sadly,
increasingly tacky storylines eventually eroded the
WCW's popularity and left it vulnerable to a hostile
takeover by the WWF in 2001. |

Hoping to create the next big
NES action game, Data East developed Werewolf: The Last
Warrior. Unfortunately, this was not destined to
become a legend like Mega Man or Castlevania... the
visuals are sharp and it's always a kick to play as a
ferocious manbeast with claws for hands, but no thought
was put into the level design, making the stages both
generic and frustrating. |

The wildly successful game
show Wheel of Fortune comes to the NES with similarly
positive results. You'll spin a wheel covered with
prizes and penalties, then solve puzzles letter by
letter to win the cash you've accumulated. The
game may not be as flashy as the show, but it's even
more fun to play along with it, since you now have a
stake in the outcome. |
